BACH: ST JOHN PASSION

Het is 289 jaar geleden dat de nieuwe Cantor van de Nicolaïkirche in Leipzig de Johannes Passion tijdens de liturgiedienst op Goede Vrijdag uitvoerde. Sinds de herontdekking door Mendelssohn van de Mattheus en Johannes Passion, een eeuw later, is dit Oratorium over het lijden en sterven van Jezus volgens Johannes nooit in een liturgische context uitgevoerd. John Butt, leider van het vermaarde Dunedin Consort uit Edinburgh zet deze Johannes Passion in de context van een fictieve Lutherse dienst in het jaar 1739 (die nooit plaatsvond). Naast de Johannes Passion (die Bach toen vrijwel had uitgekristalliseerd) wordt gebruik gemaakt van Kerkboeken uit die tijd, maar natuurlijk ook van werken van Bach zelf zoals Da Jezus an dem Kreuze Stund. Dit levert een uiterst boeiend document op waarin het dramatische verhaal ligt ingebed in orgelspel en gezangen door de gemeente in de vorm van koor van de Glasgow Universiteit en amateurzangers. Zowel tenor Nicholas Mulroy (die in 2012 ook meewerkte aan de Hyperion opname van de Johannes Passion) en bariton Matthew Brook, imponeren door hun interpretaties van hun rollen van Evangelist en Christus. In het boekje staan alle teksten en een uitvoerige uiteenzetting van de historische achtergronden van dit unieke document.

This is the premiere recording J.S. Bach’s John Passion heard for the first time within its original liturgical context.

This recording marks the return of Dunedin Consort’s star studded cast including, Nicholas Mulroy, Matthew Brook, Robert Davies, Joanne Lunn and Clare Wilkinson.

Director John Butt has given listeners an interpretation that will provide a refreshing outlook on this masterpiece and will show the John Passion in a completely new light.

The Consort recreate the context of a passion performance during Bach’s time at Leipzig; the University of Glasgow Chapel Choir (directed by James Grossmith) and a congregational choir of amateur singers perform motets and chorales from an original Leipzig hymn book and John Butt takes centre stage to perform organ preludes on the Collins organ at Greyfriar’s Kirk in Edinburgh, where the recording took place.
