TURNING

Een bloedmooie tranentrekker, zo omschreef ik jaren geleden het nummer Hope There’s Someone van Antony & The Johnsons. De eigenzinnige Antony Hegarty benam mijn adem. Ik ging mij in hem verdiepen en kocht zijn wonderlijke album I Am A Bird Now (2005). Turning (CD & DVD) is een door Charles Atlas geproduceerde film waarop dertien op een roterend platform acterende vrouwen (‘the beauties’) worden gevolgd tijdens hun samenwerking met Antony & The Johnsons in The Barbican in Londen (2006). Het zijn aangrijpende levensverhalen die muzikaal worden omlijst met de beste live-composities van Antony, waarop tevens twee niet eerder uitgebracht nummers zijn te horen; Whose Are These en Tears Tears Tears. In een wereld waarin acceptatie en respect steeds verder naar de achtergrond verschuiven, is Turning een veredeld manifest waarin Antony - zoals hij dat uitermate goed kan -, hoop, liefde en oprechtheid tentoonspreidt. Al met al een prachtig geheel!
