Hoe de ontwikkeling van de wereldberoemde Philly Sound (Lou Rawls, Archie Bell & The Drells, O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Three Degrees, etc.) van het door (Kenny) Gamble & (Leon) Huff opgerichte label Philadelphia International - om met Berry Gordy's Motown te concurreren en hem uiteindelijk zelfs te overschaduwen - tot stand kwam wordt gedetailleerd geïllustreerd en uiteraard luister bij gezet op deze essentiële release op Kent (Ace). Een soort prequel op de twee prachtige delen (volume twee is nog beter) Philadelphia Roots op Soul Jazz Records, waarop ook al de nadruk werd gelegd op funk in de trant van Stax in combinatie met Northern Soul, rijkelijk gelardeerd met luchtige strings en een four-to-the-floor pulsering die altesaam hint richting vroege disco.
