GLANERT: REQUIEM FOR HIERONYMU

Detlev Glanerts Requiem for Hieronymus Bosch een spektakelstuk noemen, is bijna een understatement. Vanaf de openingskreet ‘Jheronymus! Jheronymus Bosch!’ ontketent Glanert een ware storm met twee koren, groot orkest en solisten. Daarbij combineert de componist de traditionele requiemtekst met passages uit de Carmina Burana waarin aartsengel Michael de schilder de zeven doodzonden verwijt. Hoewel er zeker ook momenten van verstilling zijn, is het geheel overweldigend, maar gelukkig houdt dirigent Markus Stenz te allen tijde de controle waardoor het requiem de volle tachtig minuten blijft boeien.

The famed painter Hieronymus Bosch portrayed medieval life brimming with symbolism, fantasy and riddles. Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the artist’s passing, the RCO commissioned Detlev Glanert to write a requiem for soloists, choir, organ and orchestra. The composition translates the demonic nature of Bosch’s paintings with textual counterparts into music. Glanert combines traditional requiem texts with excerpts from the manuscript collection Carmina Burana – each movement of the Requiem is accompanied by a poem about the seven deadly sins.
