Igor Levit werd in 1987 geboren in Rusland, maar groeide op in Duitsland. Daar begon zijn carrière die hem tot Rising Star van de grote Europese concertzalen maakte. Zijn recitals worden zonder uitzondering goed ontvangen, maar het getuigt van lef en ambitie om voor je eerste cd-opname te kiezen voor de vijf laatste pianosonates van Beethoven. Levits interpretatie van de Hammerklavier sonate is ronduit indrukwekkend, maar wat vooral opvalt, is de consistentie; alsof Levit deze sonates al een heel leven met zich meedraagt. Levit gaat niet voor het rauwe randje, maar zorgt overal voor een prachtige klankkleur. Indrukwekkend.
