Dat het Rastafari geloof diep verankerd is met de reggae mag bekend zijn. Als in de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw Jamaica onder hevige politieke veranderingen staat, predikt activist Marcus Garvey voor de 'terug naar Afrika'- beweging en voorspeld de kroning van de Haile Selassie als keizer van Ethiopie. Het bevorderen van het zwarte zelfrespect spreekt de muzikanten aan en al in de vijftiger jaren is de invloed in de muziek terug te horen. Souljazz heeft een prachtige verzamelaar samengesteld die laat horen hoe de Rastafari beweging zich ontwikkeld en steeds belangrijker wordt. Met name in de rootsreggae van de zeventiger jaren is het woord van Jah in iedere song te horen.
