MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO. 2

Onstuimig, verrassend en hoogst dramatisch. Met deze woorden is deze opname van Mahlers tweede symfonie (op sacd, dvd en bluray) het best te omschrijven. Het is de eerste fysieke neerslag van wat de komende vijf jaren een complete Mahler-cyclus moet worden en meteen laat de nieuwe chef-dirigent Daniele Gatti een duidelijk ander geluid dan zijn voorganger Janssons. De lange Mahler-traditie van het Concertgebouworkest is via Chailly, Haitink en Mengelberg terug te voeren tot de componist die zelf de tweede symfonie in Amsterdam dirigeerde. Onder Gatti vertraagt en versnelt het orkest op onverwachte momenten, last korte pauzes in en is niet vies van enorme fortissimo’s. Deze eigenzinnige aanpak zal niet iedereen meteen bekoren, maar is wel van de eerste tot de laatste noot enerverend, al ontspoort Gatti in het slotdeel.

The names of Gustav Mahler and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra are inseparable. Willem Mengelberg's pioneering work and Mahler's own guest performances with the orchestra have laid the foundations for the Dutch Mahler cult and the RCO's Mahler tradition that flourished ever since. During the past years, Daniele Gatti has conducted strong and spectacular performances of four Mahler symphonies as a guest conductor. After the Fifth, Ninth, Sixth and Third, Gatti's first Mahler symphony as chief conductor was the Second Symphony.

This recording marks the start of a new RCO Live Mahler cycle with Daniele Gatti.
