COMPLETE JAN AKKERMAN

Jan Akkerman is, met Ad van den Berg anderhalf decennium later, een van de weinige Nederlandse gitaristen die in het buitenland iets in de melk te brokkelen had. Niet voor niets werd hij in 1973 uitgeroepen door het Engelse Melody Maker als beste gitarist. Akkerman had dit ongetwijfeld vast kunnen houden als hij niet zijn compromisloze karakter had gehad en dientengevolge zijn eigen pad getrokken had. Een directe gevolg was dat hij zijn sterrenstatus weer vrij snel kwijt was en slechts bij een groep liefhebbers geliefd bleef. Het tweede gevolg was dat hij tot nu toe een nogal een wispelturige carrière heeft gehad. Deze box concentreert zich op zijn solowerk en opent met Talent For Sale uit 1968, opgenomen met de ritmesectie van The Hunters waarvan Russian Spy And I terug te vinden is op de bonus-cd. Naast zijn werk met Focus gaat Jan zich verdiepen in de luit. Het instrument krijgt een steeds prominentere rol zoals op Profile en Tabernakel te horen is. Op de laatste vinden we overigens een fraaie herbewerking van House of The King terug met Carmine Appice en Tim Bogert, destijds van Cactus. Eli is de echte nieuwe start: Akkerman werkt met wie hij wil en doet wat hem goed dunkt. In het geval van Eli is dat Kaz Lux, zijn oude Brainbox-maat. Hier is die plaat overigens gekoppeld aan het eveneens lekkere Transparental uit 1980. Ook zonder Lux maakt hij de prachtige platen zoals Jan Akkerman uit 1977, het fraai bluesalbum Blues Hearts (1994) en Minor Details (2011). Op Akkerman 3 (1979) en Pleasure Point (1982) verschuift hij wat meer naar de fusion terwijl het experiment niet geschuwd wordt getuige Oil In The Family, het in een dag opgenomen album uit 1980 en From The Basement (1984) of het latere C.U. (2003). In de tussentijd blijft Akkerman ook gewoon samenwerkingen aangaan. Zo vinden we Prism (1977), een prachtige samenwerking met Tony Scott en Aranjuez met Claus Ogerman van het jaar daarop. Dit tezamen met alle niet genoemde platen geeft aan wat een uiteenlopende muzikale paden Akkerman bewandeld heeft. Eigengereid? Zeker, maar ook weldegelijk de moeite waard!. De 24 cd’s worden aangevuld met een cd met een door Akkerman gemaakte selectie van groepswerk waaronder Brainbox en Focus, terwijl de laatste gereserveerd is voor demo’s en wat andere rariteiten. Sommige cd’s bevatten bonustracks, maar of The Complete Collection helemaal compleet is, weet ik niet helemaal zeker. Het geheel is echter meer dan de moeite waard en een mooi eerbetoon aan de rijke carrière van Akkerman!
